“Turvey seems to be able
to produce work which pays homage to a cherished space…..dance which
remains relevant and thought-provoking" Thom Shaw, Leeds Guide. |
Site-Specific
Projects
Choreography in unusual places has brought exciting
performances to surprised audiences.
The
Bramley Two Go Shopping

Turveyworld joined forces with 103 Falling Birds to create
a unique site specific performance as part of I Love West Leeds Festival,
in July 2009.
They performed at Bramley Shopping centre during the festival, to an audience
of unsuspecting shoppers. For some ‘shopping will never be the same
again!’

RED
Barnsley Big Dance,
Canon Hall, near Barnsley. Summer 2008.
Gerry was been commissioned by Barnsley Council to make
a site specific work. The stunning setting was in the grounds of Cannon
Hall Park. The event was part of BIG DANCE ENGLAND and brought together
three community groups.
RED used
the space and inspiration from the gardens to create a moving piece of
dance. Live music created a unique atmosphere and the piece finished by
bringing the audience together to dance, and everyone shared CAKE!
Quotes from audience members
"RED sat beautifully within the setting of Canon Hall and sent
a truly inclusive message to the audience, not only an opportunity for
an audience to enjoy a piece of accessible, high quality dance but also
an encouragement to join in and give dance a go."
Hannah Young, Arts Council Yorkshire
"As always it is completely heartwarming to see such a very mixed
group of people interact and perform together; young and old, disabled
and non disabled, all testing their bodies and playing with the form of
dance."
Wieke Eringe, Yorkshire Dance
Picnic at Armley Mills
Performed in the grounds and building of the Museum at
Armley, Picnic was a stunning visual feast with live music, 6 dancers
in Edwardian underwear and a sulky angel. The surreal humour and the dancers'
lively engagement, made Picnic an unexpected experience in this historic
site and used the location to generate a magical dance performance.
‘Gerry Turvey can truly master space and she
has a unique ability to draw the audience into the experience of a place.’
June Gersten Roberts. Film maker and audience member.
Deep Waters

Leeds Liverpool Canal: July 2006
10 dancers, 10 bikes and a boat load of musicians along a 5 mile stretch
