Geometry of Fear
Dance @ Huddersfield Art Gallery

A movement workshop facilitated by dancer Gerry Turvey
Saturday 10 May; 1.00pm - 3.30pm. In collaboration with the Geometry of Fear Exhibition. The workshop will develop a deeper awareness of image form and space.

Namibia January 2008

Gerry started 2008 with an adventurous trip to Namibia to choreograph and train a group of young people. This was in collaboration with The Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO). This is a Namibian Welfare Organisation aiming at decreasing the impact of HIV/AIDS among young people, using Arts (both performing and visual) as a tool to create social awareness. It also trains young people and equips them with new skills.

During May 2008 Gerry will co-ordinate a promenade series of Site Specific Dance performances in York City as part of DanceYork. A dance workshop as part of this is planned during Easter Week.

Extended Play

Dance Improvisation Workshop

In Collaboration with the sound installation by Janek Schaefer

This is a unique opportunity to improvise alongside a sound installation that is triggered by movement in the space.

Janek Schaefer’s ‘Extended Play…a triptych for the children of war’ is an uplifting and enveloping mass of sound. A trio of turntables play a score for piano, cello and violin adapted from music transmitted in Warsaw during world war two.

Dance will be introduced in the space in relation to the sound and ideas of the work. Improvisational scores will be given as well as an opportunity to create movement material from the actual score. Dancers with experience of improvisation are all welcome, come and share this transforming and meditative experience for a brilliant start to 2008.

Following the success of the workshops with HOOT music and dance in Huddersfield, Gerry will run the dance project for the whole year. Some of the workshop sessions will be open, and take place at Huddersfield Art Gallery. These sessions are aimed at people who have mental health issues, but are also open to anyone wishing to improvise, be creative and open new doors to personal growth. ‘Drawing On The Body’

This workshop will focus on the both using the body in space, and using the body as a site for interpretation of Art. Artists welcome to draw the dancers during the workshop (limited places).

Following the success of the summer school, Gerry Turvey will lead this dance workshop in collaboration with Leeds Art Gallery. It will offer participants an opportunity explore through physicality interpretation of chosen Art Works.
Gerry will guide participants to use themes of the Art works for creative development.

Reflecting on the Art works, personal response will take the form of, shape, image, dynamic and flow. Individual, partner and small group work will follow. This may lead to short pieces of work to share with each other in the Gallery space. The workshop is open to teachers, artists, dancers and curious explorers; no movement experience is necessary, just a willingness to play and be open to new ideas.

Working with a Partner

This workshop will focus on using a partner to create movement and discover new ways of working together. No need to bring your own partner! We will all share each other. It is open to dancers and curious explorers, some dance or yoga experience would be an advantage, but also as a willingness to play and be open to new ideas.

Starting with a Yoga based warm up the workshop will go on to develop ways of sharing weight, supporting another body, moving together in harmony and creating duets to show at the end of the day.

Picnic at Armley Mills

A site specific dance extravaganza picnic at Armley Mills. Part of the 'I Love West Leeds Festival'

If you are feeling hungry for a performance experience with a difference, then treat yourself this stunning visual feast (literally and physically!) in the grounds and buildings of Armley Mills.‘Picnic’ involves seven dancers and live music in a mouth-watering and exciting performance.

Inspired by the striking Architecture of the Armley Mills building, the dancers will transport you to a world of sight smell and tastes in a sumptuous and delicious experience. The not-to-be missed event of the week!

Following the success of the summer school from last year and to celebrate the re-opening of the Art Gallery, Gerry Turvey will lead this movement workshop in collaboration with Leeds City Art Gallery. It will offer participants an opportunity to define thoughts and process visual information by a physical interpretation of chosen Art Works.

Using selected Art works from both the permanent collection and the “Fairy Tale’ exhibitions, Gerry will guide participants to use the themes to develop and create their own ideas and images. Reflecting on the works, personal response will take the form of, shape, image, dynamic and flow. Individual, partner and small group work will follow. This may lead to short pieces of work to share with each other in the Gallery space.
